Lions Crush Cowboys’ Playoff Chances as Jahmyr Gibbs Dominates With 3-TD Performance

The game was very important for both teams’ playoff chances, but the Lions were the only team that played with real urgency. Detroit scored touchdowns, while Dallas kept settling for field goals. In the first quarter, Gibbs scored on a 1-yard run. In the second quarter, David Montgomery broke a tackle and ran 35 yards for another touchdown.

The Cowboys moved the ball but could only get three field goals. Their last field goal came with 55 seconds left in the half, which gave Detroit too much time. The Lions used that time to kick their own field goal and go up 20–9 at halftime. Dallas made a big mistake early in the second half. Prescott threw toward George Pickens, who didn’t go all-in for the ball. It got tipped and landed right in the hands of linebacker Derrick Barnes.

The Lions quickly turned that into another touchdown, this time a catch by rookie Isaac TeSlaa, making it 27–9. That version of the Lions — making big plays and playing tough defense — looks great. Their kicker, Brandon Aubrey, kept them alive with long field goals, including a 63-yarder that looked easy for him. Then a defensive mistake left Ryan Flournoy wide open for a 42-yard touchdown.

 A successful 2-point try made it 30–27 with about 10 minutes left. But the Lions responded fast. A long kickoff return, a 29-yard catch by Jameson Williams plus a roughing-the-passer penalty, and then a 10-yard TD run by Gibbs pushed the lead back to double digits in less than three minutes. Dallas’ defense, which had improved after trading for Quinnen Williams, fell apart again. They gave up more than 400 yards and 44 points in a must-win game. This sudden offensive firepower is why the Lions are still dangerous. They have injuries, but there’s no dominant team in the league this year. The Lions could still get hot — though they haven’t won two straight games since Week 5.

 If the Cowboys hadn’t started the season poorly, losing to Detroit wouldn’t be such a big problem. The Lions are a strong team and tough to beat at home. But because Dallas put themselves in a tough spot earlier in the season, this loss almost destroys their playoff hopes unless something miraculous happens. There’s no room for mistakes anymore.
