Cowboys Fall to Lions 44-30, Playoff Chances Drop

On Thursday night, the Dallas Cowboys lost 44-30 to the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. It was their first loss since the death of Marshawn Kneeland, their first loss in over a month, and it dropped their record to 6-6-1. This defeat also made their chances of reaching the playoffs much harder.
Quarterback Dak Prescott said the team was angry, not discouraged:
"I think guys are pissed off. It’s not like we’re giving up. Not at all. This loss should motivate us. Starting with me, I’ll make sure we have a great week of preparation."
Playoff Chances Take a Hit
According to ESPN Analytics, the Cowboys’ playoff chances are now only 8%. They would lose tiebreakers to the Bears, Panthers, and Lions.
Their remaining four games are against:

Vikings (Dec. 14) – losing record

Chargers (8-4) on Dec. 21

Commanders (Dec. 25) – losing record

Giants (Jan. 3 or 4) – losing record
The Cowboys had been on a good run, winning their previous three games (Raiders, Eagles, Chiefs) since trading for defensive tackle Quinnen Williams. This game was their fourth in 18 days, a tough stretch for any team.
Coach Schottenheimer: Turnovers and Trenches Lost
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said he was proud of the effort but admitted the Cowboys failed in crucial areas:

They lost the turnover battle 3–0 — two interceptions and one fumble.

The Lions scored 14 points off those mistakes.

The Cowboys averaged only 3.8 yards per run, with Prescott having the longest run (12 yards).

They allowed four rushing touchdowns, three by Jahmyr Gibbs.
Schottenheimer said, "The game came down to taking care of the ball and winning the trenches. We didn’t do either."
Dallas Tries to Fight Back
Prescott was pressured 20 times, including 10 pressures in the fourth quarter, and he was sacked five times. The offense also had a couple of costly offensive pass interference calls.
Even after losing CeeDee Lamb to a concussion in the third quarter, the Cowboys twice cut the Lions’ lead to one score. However, both times the defense immediately allowed Detroit to score touchdowns.
Schottenheimer said, "The complementary football wasn’t there like in past weeks."
Prescott admitted the team no longer fully controls its playoff chances:
"We’re going to need some things to go our way now. What we can control is our effort and how we approach each game."
CeeDee Lamb Injured With Concussion
Cowboys star receiver CeeDee Lamb left the game in the third quarter with a concussion. He jumped for a fade pass in the end zone and hit his head hard on the ground. His arms went stiff (fencing response), and Prescott immediately checked on him.
Lamb was taken to the medical tent and later ruled out. Before the injury, he had six catches for 121 yards.

His 121 yards Thursday tied him with Tony Hill for the second-most 100-yard games (26) in franchise history. Michael Irvin leads with 47.
The Cowboys now have a 10-day break, giving Lamb extra time to clear the concussion protocol before their next game on Dec. 14 against the Vikings.
